Autism Child Therapy with Pets

Children with autism usually have impaired social skills, can not focus, and lack empathy and sympathy for others. There are already a variety of therapies that can be applied to help children with autism one of them is with animal-assisted therapy, a therapy that involves animals in their therapeutic actions. The purpose of such therapy is to help people recover from mental disorders, one of them children with autism.

Having a pet turns out to be one of the good therapies for a child suffering from autism. A study conducted on children with autism shows that children who have pets are easier to socialize and interact with new people.

Improve the child's physical abilities

Various studies show that most families who have dogs, routinely take the pet to walk out of the house about 30 minutes a week. This can improve their physical ability, because without realizing it, by taking the pets walking relaxed or playing, this encourages them to move actively. In addition, small games performed by children with pets can improve physical abilities, such as improving motor skills, train the child's balance.

By doing so on a regular basis, it can also lower the level of depression in children. Just by pet stroking, can make a child's body relax and increase the hormone that served to reduce stress. Activity with pets can also improve bone health of children.

Improve mental health of children

Research conducted in 2007, applying Animal-Assited Therapy therapy that shows that there is an increase in verbal interaction, focus, confidence, and relieve loneliness, anxiety, and stress in children with autism. The existence of routine activities with pets to make children learn to manage emotions, such as just looking at a pet fish from outside the aquarium, enough to make children relieve stress and win themselves. Indirectly, the child is responsible for care, feeding, and attention to the pet. This of course can increase his sense of responsibility. Caring for pets is one way to cultivate a sense of affection, care, and attention to each other.

Improve social interaction

Pets make children brave to start new relationships, increasing the desire to join the group. In addition, it is also known from the study that children who have pets better in terms of introducing themselves to others, provide better information, and provide more responses if invited to interact. Relationships that occur between children and pets can foster a sense of empathy and sympathy in children.

Improve your child's immunity

Children who grow up in families who have pets are shown to have a better immune system compared to families with no pets. This is stated in several studies that says that pets can help 'employers' avoid allergies. Other studies have also mentioned that children who live and grow with existing cats or dogs in the vicinity, less likely to experience heat and asthma. This also occurs in a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin, a child who often interacts with cats, has a strong immune level and avoid chronic respiratory problems.

Increase insights

Interacting with pets can also help children to improve and expand their insights, such as about size, color. Research has been done in school-aged children and shows that children often read books in front of their pets and it can help children to improve their reading ability. In addition, it can develop non-verbal communication skills, Intellegent Quotient, and emotional intelligence.
